He was retiring due to a terminal illness.
This was part of a speech Gehrig gave when he had to retire from baseball due to a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), later known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Gehrig went on to add, "I have been in ballparks for 17 years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans."
