Pornography, written material or pictures intended solely to cause sexual arousal. In the United States, many states and communities have laws declaring pornography obscene and hence illegal. However, varying opinions on what exactly constitutes pornography have made these laws difficult to enforce.

Many persons believe that pornography debases human sexuality. Some hold that pornography undermines accepted moral standards and that it is the responsibility of government to suppress it. Others, however, argue that pornography is protected from suppression by the constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press. They also believe it is not a function of government to be involved in establishing moral standards.

Proponents of legalized pornography advocate certain restrictions. They oppose the publication of pornography involving children or emphasizing violence. Also, they would outlaw the sale of any pornographic materials to children.
